Lakers back up national wrestling ranking

Garrett College blitzes Bergen, Jamestown in tri-match

Garrett College lived up to its national wrestling ranking last Friday night while routing a pair of Gulf Atlantic District rivals in a home tri-match.

The Lakers blew out Bergen (NJ) Community College, 43-11, and blasted Jamestown (NY) Community College, 42-12, in their first home matches of the season. Garrett entered the night ranked 14th in the latest NJCAA national poll.

"We wrestled well," acknowledged GC head coach David Wingate. "The team comradery was great. We came out ripping and ready to go."

The Lakers' lightweights helped GC get off to strong starts in both matches.

Nicholas Anderson produced 12 points at 125 pounds – via a pin and an injury default – and 133-pounder Dekhi Church had a technical fall and a pin at 133 as Garrett blew out to a 17-0 lead against Bergen and an 11-0 advantage against Jamestown. Both opponents studiously avoided GC standout Camden Hull, who received forfeits at 141 against Bergen and 149 against Jamestown.

Laker Cameron Cannaday (157) registered two wins while Braeden Poorbaugh had a pin at 184 against Bergen and claimed a 197-pound forfeit versus Jamestown.

Elijah Boston may have had the most dramatic wins of the night. Boston defeated Bergen's 2025 national qualifier Diego Camargo, 5-2, with a late takedown and then grinded out a 10-4 victory over Jamestown's Joshua Kriger.

Brooks Smith went 1-1 at 165 pounds while Everett Nichols and Kollin Sullivan each notched a win at 174 pounds. Sundiata Chavis split two matches, winning at 184 against Jamestown and losing at 197 against Bergen.

Garrett also performed impressively in its Defend the Laker Open tournament on Saturday. Cannaday and Smith took home titles at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, while Anderson (125), Hull (141), and Boston (285) each finished second as five Lakers reached the finals.

"We're right on track," Wingate said after Saturday's open tournament. "We're actually starting to put things together earlier than we had in the past."

The Lakers will participate in the Shenandoah Invitational on Sunday at Shenandoah (VA) University.
