Lakers earn first win in weekend split
Rout against Westmoreland followed by 1-point loss to Beaver
The Titans’ inside game was just enough Sunday afternoon to overcome Garrett College’s long-range shooting in the Community College of Beaver County’s 80-79 men’s basketball win.
CCBC’s Dakari Bradford (team-high 31 points, game-high 19 rebounds) and teammate Omarian Smith (21 points, 10 rebounds) each notched double-doubles as the Titans finished with a 57-40 rebounding edge, including 43-27 on the defensive boards. Their efforts helped Beaver win a game in which GC outscored the Titans, 36-6, from the 3-point line.
Jhaiden Wilson scored a game-high 32 points, including eight 3-pointers, to pace GC. Alex Vargo added 18 points and Nate Washington contributed 14, including three treys, but no other Laker had more than six points.
Garrett College routed Westmoreland County Community College, 121-65, Saturday night in the opening game of the CCBC mixer for its first win of the season. Vargo scored a game-high 27 points while Wilson and Daytwan Johnson contributed 14 each as five Lakers reached double figures and seven scored nine points or more.
Kydale Staten had 12 points and Rob Smith added 10 for Garrett as all 15 Lakers scored at least two points and pulled down at least two rebounds. GC finished with a 58-28 rebounding advantage.
Jordan Askew scored a game-high 22 points for Westmoreland (0-2).
Beaver (2-2) used the victory to bounce back from a 107-104 overtime loss to Potomac State College of West Virginia University (2-3) in Saturday’s nightcap contest during the first day of the mixer.
The Lakers host Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Wednesday at 6 p.m. and play at the Community College of Allegheny County on Tuesday, November 21st at 7 p.m.
