Garrett College’s Jeronimo Valencia Torba (10) scores the winning goal in last Thursday’s 2-1 men’s soccer victory over visiting Allegany College of Maryland despite the defense of Mihail Plesca. Levi Carrington is the ACM goalkeeper.

Jeronimo Valencia Torba’s unassisted goal with 36:58 remaining last Thursday night lifted host Garrett College to a 2-1 men’s soccer victory over regional rival Allegany College of Maryland.

“We had a great team effort against ACM,” said Lakers head coach Jonathan Price. “Being a first-year program, this win was a huge building block for the program’s future.”

Lucas Alonso scored a first-half goal off a Lucio Bianchi feed to help the Lakers forge a 1-1 halftime tie. Allegany’s only goal came on a deflection off a GC player.

Wyatt Hull had eight saves in goal for Garrett, which improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in NJCAA Division II Region 20. Trojan goalkeeper Levi Carrington finished with seven saves as both teams were credited with nine shots on goal.

ACM fell to 2-5, 2-3.

GC, which yielded 15 goals in its first two games, has allowed just three goals in its last three contests.

The Lakers play Anne Arundel Community College Tuesday (7 p.m.) and then host Carroll Community College Thursday (5 p.m.) and CCBC-Essex Saturday (3 p.m.).

Emily Wilson figured in all of last Thursday’s goals, scoring once and adding three assists as the visiting Trojans notched the victory over Garrett College (2-4, 2-1).

Wilson set up goals by Neveah Bunbasi and Ava Sipes in a seven-minute span early in the second half to give Allegany College of Maryland a 2-0 lead. Wilson scored off a Bunbasi assist and then set up Sipes for her second goal of the game to complete the scoring.

“The first half we played really close,” said GC head coach Zach Ward. “I thought we were in a good position to give it a go in the second half. We couldn't find a way to get back into the game after conceding a goal right out of halftime.”

The Trojans (3-3-2, 3-1-1) finished with a 24-5 advantage in shots. ACM goalkeeper Genesis Alvarez stopped all four shots she faced to earn the shutout.

Kayla Moore stopped both shots she faced in 38 minutes in goal for the Lady Lakers. Ada White had six saves while yielding all four goals in 52 minutes.

“The good thing is we control our fate when it comes to the postseason,” said Ward, whose squad has a three-game slate this week (5 p.m. Tuesday at Anne Arundel Community College; 3 p.m. Thursday against visiting Carroll Community College, and 1 p.m. Saturday against visiting CCBC-Essex).

Anne Arundel (6-3, 3-1) and Carroll (4-3, 4-1) both have winning records while Essex is 2-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in NJCAA Division II Region 20.
