Lakers ready to launch men's soccer program
Price's squad opens Saturday with 2:30 p.m. game at Howard
Jonathan Price is taking the long view.
"Rome wasn't built in a day," said Price, head coach of Garrett College's first-year men's soccer program. "The great news for us is we've got some real talent in Year 1. We're not super-deep – but I think we can fix that with a full year of recruiting."
The Lakers have 22 players and "the defensive side is good," said Price.
Southern Garrett High graduates Nathaniel Argrabrite (all-conference in 2024) and JM Holland (all-area last year) combine with Anthony Diaz (Germantown) and the Dominican Republic's Adrian Laba to "give me four good center backs," according to Price. Other strong defenders include Clear Spring grad Logan Mowen ("very consistent, works hard, very steady player," said Price) and Max Hinchy (Manchester, England), a holding midfielder who is expected to help both defensively and offensively.
The defenders will be playing in front of a pair of goalkeepers – Northern Garrett grad and all-area selection Wyatt Hull along with James Helmintoller-Quantz (Hot Springs, VA). "We have two good ones," Price said of the net-minding pair.
GC has a number of potentially explosive offensive players, including Spanish striker Lucas Alonso, and two more stars off Price's 2024 Southern Garrett High squad: 2024 Area Offensive Player of the Year Ben Lohr and all-conference attacker Kade Savage.
"Lucas should be among the league scoring leaders. His left foot is one of the better 'lefts' I've seen," said Price. "Ben, who's done everything I've asked of him in the past, has come in and worked really hard. Kade Savage falls into the same category."
Price – whose squad opens a 14-match regular season Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. contest at Howard Community College – is also anticipating big things from homeschooled left wing Darius Hamilton (Owings Mills).
"Darius may be our most talented player," said Price. "We're going to work with him to become the best version of himself."
Price is also pleased with his midfield's talent level, including international recruits Lucio Bianchi (Uruguay) and Jeronimo Valencia (Colombia).
"Lucio has a lot skill. His touch is unbelievable and he's fun to watch," said Price. "I think Jeronimo is going to create a lot of goals for us."
Price said midfielder Caden Vaughan (Frankfort, WV) "has been as impressive as any in the preseason" and predicted Nathaniel Lopez Romero (Baltimore) "will cover more miles in the field than any player in the league."
Price's two sophomores – Luis Bothello (Brazil) and Macdiel Marquez – play for the wrestling and men's basketball teams, respectively. They're both adding soccer this year as they become two-sport performers for the Lakers.
