Kos puts up career-high 33 as Garrett downs Cecil in overtime
Lakers run hoop winning streak to five
North East, MD – Petar Kos and Keyonta Johnson combined to shoot 5-for-5 and split 12 points in overtime Sunday afternoon as Garrett College downed host Cecil College, 110-101, for the Lakers' fifth consecutive men's basketball win.
Kos scored a career-high 33 points while hauling in 11 rebounds. Johnson had 16 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and two steals as GC (13-9 overall, 5-3 region) won for the seventh time in the last eight games.
"Guys have bought into what we're trying to do," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "They're believing in themselves and in each other. We've been able to find ways to win close games – our team's confidence and commitment have become contagious."
Nehemiah Johnson (game-high 16 rebounds) and Cory Harper (five rebounds) each scored 13 points. Dechaun Reed contributed 12 points while Lenny Smith (seven rebounds) and Sefton Robinson added 10 points each as seven Lakers reached double figures.
BJ Spencer's 3-pointer with 61 seconds remaining in regulation created the 95-95 tie that forced overtime, capping Cecil's comeback from an 11-point, second-half deficit. The Lakers responded with an 8-0 run on four layups – two by Kos – to start the extra period, and Cecil never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
"They [Cecil] certainly had all of the momentum coming back at the end of regulation." McCullough observed. "Our guys were able to reset and say, 'OK, it's zero-zero. We've got a five-minute game, and we've got to find a way to win.' "
Jeremiah Falko scored a team-high 32 points and Marcus Edmond Jr. tallied 29 in a losing effort for the Seahawks (12-10, 4-4).
Keyonta Johnson's buzzer-beating, 3-pointer from halfcourt created a 44-44 halftime tie.
The Lakers host Westmoreland County Community College (5-14, 0-8) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Chesapeake College (16-5, 4-4) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a pair of region contests.
"This is going to be a big week for us," said McCullough, adding, "We've got to keep it going."

Baltimore, MD – The Lakers – who overcame a double-digit, first-half deficit – held host Baltimore City to 33 percent shooting from the field in the second half, helping GC erase a 43-41 halftime hole last Saturday to earn the win.
Dechaun Reed scored a team-high 15 points as six Lakers reach double figures. Nehemiah Johnson (10 rebounds) and Keyonta Johnson (six rebounds, four assists, two steals) each scored 12 points, while Lenny Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Cory Harper (nine rebounds) and Petar Kos (five rebounds, three assists) each added 10 points for Garrett.
Lebarron Gordon tallied 15 points off the bench for Baltimore City to tie Reed for game-high scoring honors.
GC 106, Beaver Co. 86
Keyonta Johnson (11 rebounds, eight assists, three steals) and Petar Kos (five rebounds, three assists) each scored 21 points last Wednesday as the Lakers cruised past Community College of Beaver County.
Cory Harper went 6-for-11 from the 3-point stripe while scoring 20 points, and Lenny Smith (seven rebounds, three steals) added 19 for the Lakers. Dechaun Reed was the fifth Laker in double figures with 14 points.
Beaver County's Trey Armstrong led all scorers with 22 points.
Garrett – which had a 47-39 lead at intermission – broke the game open with a 59-point second half.
