East Stroudsburg, PA – The East Stroudsburg Open primarily featured wrestling teams from four-year colleges and universities. That didn’t keep Garrett College from finishing 14th out of 48 teams at the Lakers’ season-opening competition.

"This was our first year going to this tournament," said GC head wrestling coach David Wingate. "I think this shows that we’re going to be right up there competing for our district title and trying to get as many guys as possible to nationals."

Cameron Cannaday led the way for the Lakers, going 4-2 at 157 pounds in Sunday’s competition.

"We were fortunate to get him in July," Wingate said of Cannaday. "He was a private school Maryland state champ. He might be young as a freshman, but you can tell when he walks in the gym that he’s very comfortable in his abilities and how he wrestles."

Local fans will get their first chance to see the Lakers in regular-season action on Friday when they wrestle Bergen County (NJ) College at 5:15 p.m. and Jamestown (NY) Community College at 6:30 p.m. Bergen and Jamestown square off at 4 p.m.

All three teams will be part of this weekend’s Defend the Lake Tournament at GC Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

The University of Pittsburgh/Johnstown totaled 301 points to run away with the team competition in the East Stroudsburg Open. Host East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania was second with 213 points.

Cannady lost his first match before winning three straight in the consolation round by a combined score of 40-4. He edged Temple University’s Mukammad Nasriddinkhujaeve, 9-8 on riding time, before taking a 20-5 loss to Conner Doherty of the United States Military Academy Prep School.

Garrett won seven total matches at 125 pounds behind Nick Anderson (3-2), Keon Gavin (3-2), and Brandon Womack (1-2). Anderson’s last victory eliminated Gavin, 8-4, in an all-Garrett matchup.

Elijah Boston went 2-2 at 285 pounds and Braeden Poorbaugh was 2-2 at 184. Sunny Chavis (184), Brooks Smith (165), Dekhi Church (133), and Noah Obinna (149) each won a match for the Lakers, who are ranked 14th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national poll.
