Garrett College's Camden Hull (hand raised) earned a 12-2 major decision over Frostburg State University's Stephen Stottlemyer last Saturday at 141 pounds. Hull and the rest of the Lakers will travel to Lackawanna College for Saturday's Gulf Atlantic District championship tournament.

Garrett College built a lot of momentum for Saturday's NJCAA Gulf Atlantic District wrestling tournament with a signature, 29-12 win over Frostburg State University's reserves.

Keon Gavin's incredible comeback in the 133-pound match helped secure GC's first-ever win over FSU. Gavin trailed Owen Lehman, 14-0, after one period, but pulled off a stunning win by pinning Lehman just 23 seconds into the second period.

Brooks Smith also registered a pin for the Lakers, finishing off Seth Wayland with 1:41 remaining in the second period of the 165-pound bout. Camden Hull (141) and Liam DeBaugh (285) produced major decisions for the Lakers, with Hull downing Stephen Stottlemyer, 12-2, and DeBaugh defeating Shawn Traynham, 9-1.

"We were right there competing with them," said GC head coach David Wingate, adding, "In the past, they [FSU] brought up their third-string wrestlers and we normally haven't had good outings against them. It was a good win for us."

GC also earned a split of two matches against Northern Garrett High graduates wrestling with the Bobcats. Laker Nick Anderson (125) defeated Nate Wilhelm, 10-4, while FSU's Austen Slaybaugh (157) used a late takedown to edge Jaiden Fields, 8-5.

Laker Everett Nichols (174) took the lead for good with a first-period takedown while beating Parker Intrieri, 5-2, and GC's Braeden Poorbaugh (184) used a third-period takedown to defeat Wesley Outlaw, 5-4.

FSU's Logan Intrieri (149) defeated Noah Obinna, 6-3, and Bobcat Alex Hoy (197) pinned Sundiata Chavis in 50 seconds.

The FSU victory came on Sophomore Day, honoring the squad's eight sophomores.

"I'm glad we were able to send off the sophomores with a win," said Wingate.

GC can now focus on this weekend's Gulf Atlantic District championship, which will be held at Lackawanna (Scranton, PA) College. The Lakers finished the regular season with a 5-7 team mark, including 3-2 against other two-year opponents.

"I think we're in a good spot," said Wingate, looking ahead to the district tourney. "We've wrestled a lot of four-year competition – older guys who are a little bit more skilled. That's forced us to mature a little more quickly."

Wingate identified host Lackawanna and Andrew (Cuthbert, GA) College – both preparing to become four-year institutions – as two squads to watch in the team competition. He expects Anderson, DeBaugh, Cameron Cannaday (157), and Elijah Boston (285) to be among the Lakers having an impact at the district tournament.

"We're just fine-tuning some little things at this point," said Wingate. "I think it's going to be a fun little showing."
