Michaux leads balanced GC past Skipjacks

Garrett builds 22-point cushion and holds off late Chesapeake surge

Gianna Michaux scored a team-high 16 points as five Lady Lakers reached double figures Saturday afternoon in an impressive 73-63 women's basketball win over visiting Chesapeake College.

"That's the way this team runs best – not focusing on one player, but on making the right plays," said GC head coach JT Lewis.

Da'shai Morton-Hall (eight rebounds), Jameriah Butler (five rebounds, three assists), and Marrah Milbourne each scored 12 points for Garrett. Carly Wilt was the fifth Lady Laker in double figures with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.

GC used an effective trap off a 2-3 zone to limit Chesapeake to just 27 first-half points, helping the Lady Lakers build a 36-27 halftime advantage.

"We had a good defensive effort," said Lewis. "And the Milbourne twins [Marrah and Marlynn] did a really good job coming off the bench and giving us a spark."

Garrett totally dominated the third quarter, scoring 23 points and building its biggest lead of 22 points on a pair of Michaux free throws that made it 55-33.

Chesapeake fought back in the fourth quarter as Amaya Richmond scored 10 of her game-high 18 points. The Lady Lakers didn't help their own cause at the free throw line, going 8-for-18 at the charity stripe in the final quarter.

Chesapeake pulled within eight points on three occasions in the fourth period, the last time on a Zakiyah Zimmerman free throw with 1:35 remaining that made it 67-59. Michaux slammed the door on the Skipjack comeback, hitting a jumper with 1:05 remaining and the shot clock about to expire, and then tacking on a pair of free throws to get the lead back to 12 points.

"That was a good win for us," said Lewis. "Chesapeake is a tough team."

Gabrielle Corbin scored 16 points and Zimmerman added 11 for Chesapeake to join Richmond in double figures.

Community College Baltimore County-Essex (20-2 overall, 11-0 region) defeated GC, 99-58, on Sunday, as Nadia Simpson scored a game-high 21 points. Newsome had 13 points and Wilt (five rebounds, three assists) scored 11 for the Lady Lakers (9-11, 5-7).
