Moore stellar in 4-0 loss to Harford

Lady Lakers' defense keeps contest close for a half

Kayla Moore was one busy goalkeeper last Thursday afternoon.

The Garrett College women's soccer netminder stopped 14 of 18 shots in a 4-0 loss to visiting Harford Community College. She also snuffed out numerous other potential Owl scoring chances by aggressively going after contested balls.

“Kayla had a great performance,” said GC head coach Zach Ward. “She was quick off the line and the goals Harford scored were all well-earned.”

“My defensive line did a great job holding their line,” said Moore, who yielded just one goal through the game's first 48 minutes.

The game was scoreless until Noelle Buckman tallied off a Lila Vincenti feed in the game's 30th minute. Harford then broke the game open by unleashing 25 shots, including 11 on goal, after intermission.

Alli Bierman set up Harford's second goal, sending a free kick to Aubrey Heise that Heise converted with a shot from the right side just three minutes into the second half. Eight minutes later, Vincenti sent a pass from the left wing across the goal to Candace Kobus, who punched the ball into the right corner to make it 3-0.

Heise got her second goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining to complete the scoring.

Harford finished with a 40-0 advantage in shots, including 18-0 in shots on goal. The Owls also had the game's only three corner kicks.

“We knew we had to be more defensive with the way we set up our lineup,” said Ward, who employed a 5-4-1 lineup with just one attacker, which kept the Lady Lakers in the game in the first half.

LaRoche University 4, GC 0

Pittsburgh, PA – Kiki Nemceck scored the only goal of the first half Saturday off an Angelina McGrath assist as LaRoche blanked the visiting Lady Lakers (1-2).

McGrath scored a pair of second-half goals and Zaida Gonzalez Rosado tallied after the break to lead the NCAA Division III Redhawks (3-2).

“Kayla had another outstanding game in goal,” GC head coach Zach Ward of Kayla Moore, who finished with eight saves.

Jorjalynn Ward had the Lady Lakers' best offensive opportunity, but her shot late in the opening half was just wide left.

Harford 8, Garrett 0

McHenry, MD – Harford's Joshua Bell tallied just 2:08 before intermission, sparking the Owls in GC's first-ever home men's soccer game last Thursday night.

“It was definitely deflating,” GC head coach Jonathan Price said of Bell's goal. “We were really battling defensively. For 40 minutes, we went toe-to-toe with a really good [NJCAA] Division I team.”

GC starting goalkeeper Wyatt Hull had nine saves on 10 first-half shots by Harford, but Hull suffered a hand injury late in the first half. Harford tallied seven times on backup goalie James Helmintoller-Quantz.

Harford goalkeepers Louka Chainey and Nick Cannon shared the shutout for the Owls.
