Liz and Don Morin have endowed a scholarship at Garrett College that recognizes the impact a recently deceased professor had at two Western Maryland community colleges.
The Morins have endowed the Ronald W. Krug Memorial Scholarship through the Garrett College Foundation. Krug, who died in March, spent most of his professional career as a faculty member, including the last 17 years at Allegany College of Maryland.
"Ron had a love of teaching and a love for his students that was so admirable," said Liz Morin.
Krug was also well-known and highly regarded at Garrett College, where his wife, Cherie, serves as executive director of the Garrett College Foundation.
"Ron may have been a faculty member at Allegany, but we claimed him as one of our own," said Garrett College President Dr. Richard Midcap, adding, "He was one of the most upbeat people I've ever met and had a real passion for teaching."
In addition to honoring Krug, Liz Morin said their scholarship gift recognized Garrett College's value to the region.
"We think that Garrett College is a wonderful resource for the entire county," said Liz Morin, whose husband recently retired from the Garrett College Board of Trustees after 13 years of service, the last six as board chair.
She noted several of the community-focused facilities operated by Garrett College, including the Edwards Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex and the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College. "I appreciate that Don and Liz chose to both recognize the College and honor Ron with this endowment, which will increase access to higher education in our region," said Midcap.
The Morins in 2022 sold Accident-based Garrett Container Systems, which supports the design, testing, manufacturing, and repair of aluminum shipping and storage containers. Both Morins remain deeply involved in the community. Don Morin serves on the Garrett County Board of Education while Liz Morin is on the board of directors for both Appalachian Crossroads and Accident Drane House Association, Inc.
