Nationally ranked Cougars sweep GC

Frederick, 11th in NJCAA Division II, blanks Lakers twice

The Lakers discovered Sunday afternoon why Frederick Community College is the 11th-ranked NJCAA Division II baseball team in the nation.

FCC’s batting (24 hits), pitching (12 scoreless innings), and defense (zero errors) were all on display as the Cougars swept Garrett College, 6-0 and 10-0. Frederick (28-8 overall, 13-3 conference) trails first-place Harford Community College by one game in the loss column as the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference season winds down.

Cougar Dakota Smith (5-2) allowed three hits and three walks with six strikeouts over five innings to earn the win in Sunday’s opener. Grant Landis (1-for-1, two walks) reached base three times for the Lakers.

Bryce Greene pitched the final two frames for the Cougars, striking out four while yielding one hit, to pick up his sixth save.

Will Bright (3-4) took the Game 1 loss for the Lakers, yielding six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in a complete-game effort.

Frederick’s Chris Durkin (7-0) spaced six hits and struck out four in a five-inning, complete-game victory in the nightcap. Durkin faced just 18 batters thanks to three double plays by the Cougar defense.

Nick Keane (triple, two runs, RBI), Josh Wilson (double, RBI), and Jake Holler (two runs) were a combined 10-for-10 in the opener, with Keane totaling four hits for the Cougars.

Aldan Greaney (four RBI) slammed two homers and Brody Lindsey (two RBI) added a home run for Frederick in the nightcap. GC’s Chance Moore went 2-for-2.

Dakota Miller’s one-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh last Wednesday erased a 6-5 deficit as the Catamounts completed a doubleheader sweep.

GC had overcome a 5-0 deficit, taking a 6-5 lead with a two-run third inning. Karson Reed (three RBI) tied the game with an RBI single, and the Lakers took the lead on a Kellen Kinsler sacrifice that scored Zach Swanger (1-for-2).

Reed, Chance Moore (run), Giancarlo Bernardo (two runs, RBI), and Daniel Garcia each had two hits for the Lakers.

Zach Brennan (2-for-3) hit a two-out grand slam to climax a five-run first inning by Potomac State.

Reliever Tyler Henshaw (4-4) struck out three batters in the sixth while earning the win. Jake Arnold gained his first save, working a scoreless seventh.

Moore (3-3) took the loss.
