Sophomores Hailey Newsome and Da’shai Morton-Hall each buried top-of-the-key 3-pointers last Wednesday as Garrett College’s women’s basketball team rallied past visiting College of Southern Maryland, 65-58, in overtime.
Newsome’s 3-pointer, with 31.3 seconds remaining in regulation, created a 54-54 tie that forced overtime. Morton-Hall’s trey was the dagger, giving the Lady Lakers a 62-55 lead with 1:10 remaining in the extra period as Garrett (10-12 overall, 6-8 region) finished its season on a winning note.
“Hailey’s known for hitting timely ‘threes’,” said GC head coach JT Lewis. “Da’shai’s [3-pointer] was big, too. It came early in the shot clock, but she was open and nailed it.”
Garrett trailed by seven points (46-39) after CSM’s Demi Lathern (15 points, four assists) converted a layup late in the third quarter. Marlynn Milbourne (eight points, four rebounds) started the Lady Lakers’ comeback by scoring off an offensive rebound to get GC within five heading to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lakers cut Southern Maryland’s lead to a single point four times in the fourth quarter, but trailed 54-51 after Cailyn Samuel (13 points, six rebounds, three steals) hit a pair of free throws with 2:30 remaining. Newsome (16 points, nine rebounds, four blocks) finally pulled Garrett even when she nailed her trey for her only points after halftime.
Milbourne hit a layup with 3:22 remaining in overtime to put Garrett ahead to stay. She then set up Carly Wilt with a smart bounce pass that Wilt (15 points, seven rebounds, five assists) converted into a three-point play for a 59-55 GC advantage.
Morton-Hall (12 points, four steals) sealed the win with her timely 3-pointer. The Hawks, meanwhile, hurt themselves by going 1-for-6 from the foul line in overtime.
“It felt good to see them finish strong,” said Lewis, whose team had already been knocked out of playoff contention. “They could have easily rolled over, but they respected the game.”
Gianna Michaux (10 points, five rebounds) was the fourth Lady Laker in double figures while Milbourne (eight points, four rebounds) just missed double digits.
Amoni Taylor (16 points), Desiree Barnes (12 points, 11 rebounds), Lathern, and Samuel were CSM’s double-digit scorers. Sanaa Morrow didn’t score, but hauled in a game-high 20 rebounds for the Hawks (9-15, 5-9).
