Robinson double-double helps keep GC perfect
Sophomore posts 16 points, 12 rebounds as Lakers move to 4-0
Lakers move to 4-0
Stephen Robinson's 16 points and 12 rebounds helped the Garrett College men's basketball team hold off visiting Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, 66-63, last Tuesday as the Lakers improved to 4-0.
GC's K'Shawn Scott scored 15 points while teammates Nasir Coleman (10 points, nine assists) and Carmello Myles (nine points, nine rebounds) each just missed double-doubles. Keyonta Johnson added nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals off the bench for Garrett.
Garrett built a 15-point, first-half cushion, which Penn Highlands whittled down to 35-27 at intermission. The Black Bears rallied to take a 54-53 lead, but Garrett used transition opportunities to set up inside hoops by Robinson and Scott to reclaim the lead.
"Stephen and K'Shawn got a couple of big baskets late for us," noted GC head coach Matt McCullough.
"They [Penn Highlands] were really packing the paint and trying to make it tough for us inside," McCullough added. "Our best offense is an extension of our defense when we get stops and run in transition."
While Penn Highlands (2-6) has struggled early this season, McCullough said the Black Bears "had a good game plan for us."
"They threw some things at us we hadn't seen yet," said McCullough. "We were trying to make adjustments on the fly and do things a little differently than we normally do."
McCullough said his team's defense helped the Lakers avoid an early season upset.
"We had to depend on our defense for long stretches because we weren't knocking down shots like we are capable of," said McCullough. "You can learn a lot from those type of games."
The Lakers play Anne Arundel Community College at CCBC-Catonsville (11/20, 7 p.m.) before heading out for a two-game New York trip where they will play at Jamestown Community College (1-3) Saturday and SUNY-Niagara (5-0) Sunday, with both games at 3 p.m.
