Ten Lakers earn spots on NJCAA All-Academic Teams
Swanger, Dawson, and Byrd named to All-Academic 2nd Team
Ten Garrett College student athletes have earned spots on the 2022-23 NJCAA All-Academic teams.
Lucia Dawson (softball), Zachary Swanger (baseball), and Brody Byrd (baseball and wrestling) were named to the All-Academic second team. Members of the second team had grade-point averages between 3.8 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.
Seven other Lakers were named to the All-Academic third team with grade-point averages between 3.6 and 3.79. The third-team honorees are: Aimma Miller (softball), Koley Richard (women's basketball), Nathaniel Washington (men's basketball), Elijah Hunter (wrestling), and baseball players Joseph DeSiena, Grant Landis, and Wes Landis.
Eric Hallenbeck, co-athletic director and head baseball coach, said GC's impressive representation on the All-Academic teams illustrates the College's commitment to academic achievement among its student athletes.
"Any time you have student-athletes named to the All-Academic squads it is always a team effort," said Hallenbeck. "The coaches, admissions, advising, academic success center, faculty, staff, tutors, and the student-athletes themselves all play a major role.
"Having ten student athletes on the All-Academic team doesn't happen by accident," added Hallenbeck. "We have a tremendous academic support system in place. Our advising and academic success center and our faculty have a genuine interest in helping our student athletes succeed in the classroom."
Two of the recognized student athletes – Dawson and Richard – are Southern Garrett High graduates.
