Wilt helps GC women earn weekend split
Baltimore, MD – Freshman forward Carly Wilt had 16 points to lead five Lady Lakers into double figures last Saturday as the Garrett College women's basketball team downed host Baltimore City Community College, 79-40.
"Carly's been shooting well lately," GC head coach JT Lewis said after Wilt's 8-for-13 shooting from the field against BCCC. "The past three or four games we've had more balanced scoring and been playing a little better team ball."
Hailey Newsome (13 points, 10 rebounds), Marlynn Milbourne (12 points, six rebounds), Marrah Milbourne (11 points, six rebounds, three assists), and Gianna Michaux (10 points, five rebounds, five assists) also reached double digits against BCCC.
GC's defense held the Panthers to 15-for-61 (24.6 percent) shooting from the field.
Wilt also had a team-high 17 points Sunday against host Cecil College, but the Seahawks rallied from a six-point deficit in the final 8:19 to ruin Garrett's hopes for a Super Bowl Weekend sweep. Hawk reserve Kendra Watters had nine of her game-high 19 points in the final quarter, including the go-ahead 3-pointer, as Cecil posted a 73-65 win.
"Closing out games had been a problem this year," conceded Lewis. "We forced up some pretty tough shots down the stretch."
Ja'Mya Muhammad (17 points), Bri Shelton (14 points, eight rebounds), and Sara-Zionna Benson (10 points, 11 rebounds) joined Watters in double figures for Cecil.
Michaux had 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in a losing effort for GC. Da'shai Morton-Hall totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Jameriah Butler (three rebounds, three assists) and Newsome (nine rebounds, three assists, three steals) each scored 10 points for the Lady Lakers.
